La Medea
Bringing the magic of theater to the big screen and into homes, LA MEDEA re-imagines Euripides’ prevalent Greek myth into a Latin-disco-pop-Womanist variety show. The live theatrical musical reveals not a dangerous immigrant— but an infinite woman that rejects the limited gaze imposed upon her. A unique theater to screen experience, LA MEDEA was originally directed, performed, shot, edited, and broadcast in real time for 25k viewers around the world. Performers and camera women played the characters, while in-studio audiences and home viewers— commenting via live chat— played the role of the "Greek Chorus."
After its original live premiere and film broadcast, LA MEDEA toured across the country as a theatrical production, as well as screened at various film festivals as a celebrated genre bending feature film. Embracing a multiplicity of cultural lenses, LA MEDEA confronts the historically prevalent image of the hysterical, dangerous, foreign woman, and offers a revolutionary female figure willing to destroy her world in the name of justice. Chaos reigns beneath the skin of a classic myth.
LA MEDEA was written, directed, choreographed, and edited by Yara Travieso, with original music and libretto by Sam Crawford. Jonathan David Kane served as the project’s creative producer, as well as contributed additional writing and additional editing to the film.
